Meet Nelson Mushi & the Go Kilimanjaro Team

Nelson Mushi grew up in the Machame ward, directly below Kilimanjaro's southern base. In 22+ years as a senior lead guide, he has personally reached Uhuru Peak over 270 times and was among the guides who pioneered the Karanga to Barafu shortcut now used across the mountain. His approach: professional standards, genuine care, and a depth of mountain knowledge that only comes from a lifetime on the slopes.

The Mountain

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, rising to 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. Located in northern Tanzania near the town of Moshi, it is the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth, a dormant volcanic massif that towers above the surrounding savanna plains in one of the most dramatic geological formations on the planet.

Unlike many of the world's great peaks, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing equipment: no ropes, crampons, or ice axes on the standard routes. What it demands instead is physical fitness, mental determination, and the patience to acclimatize properly. With the right guide, the right route, and the right mindset, Kilimanjaro is achievable for most healthy adults.

The Five Ecological Zones

One of Kilimanjaro's most extraordinary features is its journey through five distinct climate zones as you ascend:

800-1,800m
Cultivated Zone
Coffee plantations, banana groves, and Chagga villages
1,800-2,800m
Montane Forest
Dense rainforest with blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and 140+ bird species
2,800-4,000m
Heath & Moorland
Giant heathers, giant lobelias, and the dramatic Shira Plateau
4,000-5,000m
Alpine Desert
Stark, arid landscape. Temperature swings of 40°C between day and night
5,000-5,895m
Arctic Summit Zone
Glaciers, ice fields, and Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa

What Climbers Say

Real Stories from the Summit

★★★★★

"We had an amazing Kilimanjaro climb led by Nelson Mushi. My husband and I and another couple took our 8 kids ages 15-26 and all summited. Nelson and his team were checking in on all of us regularly to make sure we were drinking enough fluid and feeling well. It was an incredible experience for two Canadian families to share."

★★★★★

"I hired Nelson to take me onto Mount Kilimanjaro for a day trip while my husband hiked to the top. Nelson was well prepared and informative, and he even lent me heavier duty rain gear when the skies opened on us. He arranged an outing for a second day to expose me to the Chagga culture and coffee making process. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Nelson."

Common Questions

Kilimanjaro FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking your Kilimanjaro climb.

You don't need to be an elite athlete, but a solid base of cardiovascular fitness is essential. We recommend being able to hike 6-8 hours a day for several consecutive days. In the months before your climb, focus on hiking with a loaded pack, stair climbing, and long-distance cardio. We'll give you a full preparation guide when you book.
The overall success rate across all routes and operators is around 65%. However, with Go Kilimanjaro Treks, our success rate is significantly higher because we select the right route for each client, enforce proper pacing (pole pole (slowly, slowly)), and monitor health closely throughout. Choosing a longer route like the Lemosho or Northern Circuit dramatically increases your odds.
Altitude sickness (AMS) is the number one reason people don't summit, not fitness. Symptoms can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness level. Our guides use pulse oximeters to monitor blood oxygen levels daily, we pace the climb carefully, and we carry supplemental oxygen. If a climber shows dangerous symptoms, our policy is always to descend immediately. Choosing a longer route gives your body more time to acclimatize.
Our all-inclusive packages cover: park entrance fees and conservation fees, all camping equipment (4-season tents, sleeping pads, dining tent, toilet tent), all meals on the mountain (3 meals per day plus snacks), experienced lead guide and assistant guides, professionally equipped porters, cook, first aid equipment including supplemental oxygen, pre-climb briefing, gear check, airport transfers, and accommodation in Moshi before and after the climb. We can also arrange travel insurance referrals.
It depends on your priorities. The Lemosho Route (7 days) is our most popular, with excellent scenery, great acclimatization, good success rates. The Northern Circuit (9-10 days) has the highest success rate of all routes and is ideal if time allows. The Marangu Route (5-6 days) is best for those wanting hut accommodation. The Rongai Route suits those wanting a quieter northern approach. The Umbwe Route is for experienced hikers wanting a challenge. Contact us and Nelson will recommend the right route for your specific situation.
The best months are January to March and June to October during Tanzania's two dry seasons. January to March is quieter and often has clearer skies but can be cold at the summit. July to September is peak season with the most stable weather but more crowds. The mountain can be climbed year-round and even the "wet" months often have clear mornings, though we advise avoiding the heaviest rains of April, May, and November if possible.
Tanzania National Parks requires climbers to be at least 10 years old. We have successfully guided teenagers as young as 15 to the summit, including on family group expeditions. Children must be physically fit and mentally prepared for the challenge. We highly recommend the Lemosho or Rongai routes for family groups as they provide the best acclimatization profile. Speak with Nelson directly about whether a summit attempt or a high-altitude camp is the right goal for younger climbers.
